The production of the Princess R35 was so secretive that the prototype was wrapped in mystery in the form of dazzle camouflage. Rather than conceal marine vessels, dazzle was designed to confuse onlookers, making it difficult to determine the size, direction, and speed of a ship.
The R35 was “unwrapped” and made her world premiere at Cannes in September 2018. Why the secrecy? This new generation of sporting yacht and Princess didn’t want anyone to steal her thunder. Built in collaboration with Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) Technologies and Italian design firm Pininfarina, the R35 is Princess’s response to the need to broaden the company’s scope and offer something unique and completely unexpected.
Powerful, dual Volvo Penta V8 gas engines fuel this vessel’s ability to accelerate to an impressive 50 knots while she maintains her agility and maneuverability. BAR Technologies and Pininfarina contributed advances in both technology and naval architecture to the development of the R35, keeping superb handling and unanticipated power at the forefront of the design. In particular, BAR Technologies’ involvement in the America’s Cup competition has given the company unsurpassed design knowledge, resources, and technical skills to pass on to Princess.
The Princess active foil system (AFS) is unheard of in the boating industry and allows the pilot to adjust a pair of carbon-fiber, T-shaped foils from the helm depending on speed and sea conditions. During sea trials, the boat “stuck” to the water, refusing to slide or succumb to the sea around it. Designed to go fast, the R35 actually performs better at 35 knots than at 25.
Built entirely of carbon fiber, the R35’s sculpted exterior contributes to her stunning aerodynamics. Available in cobalt blue, eye-catching red, and gray, the hull sports matching, narrow windows that partner with skylights that allow natural light to enter the interior. Generous, U-shaped seating wraps around a table aft of the helm, and toward the stern, a large sun bed and swim platform round out the R35’s bag of goodies.
Below deck, the open plan includes a compact galley with a two-burner stove, sink, and cabinet space. A seating area with adjustable table converts to a V berth, and a separate head has a toilet and sink.
Be the first to experience what Princess is calling an entirely new class of yacht, the R35.
