"Pilar" Is A Replica Of Ernest Hemingway’s Famous 1934 Wheeler Sport Fishing Boat. Every Detail Of The Original Vessel Has Been Incorporated Into "Pilar" After Extensive Design And Build Research.
Hemingway’s "Pilar" Is Credited With Making Big Game Sport Fishing In The Bahamas And Florida A Popular Sport.The Original Hull Was Built By Brownell Boat Works In 1960 And Designed By Walter McInnes For Rugged Offshore Fishing.
All Of The Extensive Restoration Work And Custom Deck Conversion Design Including “Hemingway’s Flying Bridge” Was Done By Walter Schulz Of Shannon Boat Company. The Hull Was Extensively Rebuilt With New Frames, Planks, Fastenings, Etc. The Underwater Portion Of The Hull Was Covered With Three Layers Of Cedar Veneers And Two Layers Of Epoxy Saturated E-glass.The Goal Was To Have A Boat That Was Impervious To Worm Attack In Southern Climates And Maintenance Free For Many Years Under Heavy Use. The Varnished Cabin Sides Were Coated With Multiple Coats Of Awlgrip Coating For UV Protection. All Diesel Engines, Tanks, Electric , Pumps, Plumbing, Electronics, Reverse Cycle Air/heat, Refrigeration, Microwave, Etc. Are New.

"Pilar" is set up for two in large single berths forward with two additional pipe berths. There are four opening bronze port lights and two overhead hatches in the private forward cabin. Aft to port is a large galley propane stove, microwave and upright refrigerator and freezer. Starboard is a specious head with new Raritan electric toilet, sink and full stall shower. The cabin is air conditioned with reverse cycle heat. The finish below is varnished mahogany and paint keeping with the period.
The wheelhouse helm station and cockpit are keeping with the original "Pilar" for offshore sport fishing including the original 1934 “flying bridge” design by Hemingway with full controls and steering. The double bench seating in the wheelhouse can also be used as berths and are removable. The original "Pilar" was powered by a 75 hp Chrysler gas engine with a 25 hp Lycoming “trolling engine” The new "Pilar" has twin 75hp diesels with new transmissions with easy accessible location under the wheelhouse sole.
