With strong competition this year for the 2022 Motor Boat Awards, Princess Yachts came out on top with two category wins out of three nominations; and an acknowledgment for highly recommended motor yacht. Finalists for the Motor Boat Awards were announced in December, with the British manufacturer nominated in three categories including, the Princess F45 for the “Flybridges up to 60ft” category, the Princess Y72 for the “Flybridges over 60ft” category, and the Princess X95 for the “custom yachts” category.
After months of testing, weeks of analyzing, and days of deliberating, judges revealed the ten category winners during a virtual ceremony on January 25th. Princess Yachts dominated with two category wins including the 45 Princess and 72 Princess for their respective category. Although the X95 did not win the award in the “custom yachts” class, the superyacht-like model was dubbed highly recommended by judges, conveying the significance of the model and its game-changing impact in the industry.
The Motor Boat Awards is the only maritime honors with the motorboat buyers’ best interest at heart. The accolades are hosted by Motor Boat & Yachting and sponsored by Side-Power, with a panel of judges that purely analyze how well the boat performs during rigorous sea trials and how well it meets the requirements of its target market in relation to its size, style, and price. Read what the Motor Boat Award judges had to say about the Princess F45 and Princess Y72 below:
With big shoes to fill given the provenance of its predecessor, the F45 wiped the slate clean and came to market with a thoroughly different accommodation layout and, in only the second instance in a Princess flybridge, Volvo Penta pod drives. This may be the smallest motor yacht in the range, but it feels every inch a Princess thanks to its beautifully lavish interior and some very clever design work from the team at Pininfarina.
The use of soft curves around the outside of the flybridge yacht is particularly successful and turns what would ordinarily be dull slabs of GRP into truly eye-catching design elements. At its heart, the F45 Princess is simply a brilliant motorboat for a family, and the decision to opt for IPS makes all the more sense when you consider this is likely to be a yacht that people step up to from smaller weekenders.
The Y72 rose to the occasion spectacularly and showed that for all the glamour, polish, and attention to detail of a modern Princess, the shipyard still gets the formula right when it comes to seakeeping. There isn’t a single area of this motor yacht that feels compromised or under-designed. The designers know when to show restraint and let the spaces speak for themselves.
It is a yacht as comfortable thundering along at 30 knots as it is with its stabilizers engaged slipping along in single figures, where its extended fuel capacity provides excellent cruising range. The Y72, in the judges’ opinion, is the best boat that Princess currently builds and right up there with the best that it has ever built.
Named the Superfly, the brave new wide-body design of the X95 Princess makes for an exceptionally voluminous craft with such a spacious, high-quality interior that it feels like it belongs to a 130ft superyacht. Learn more about the largest Princess Yacht.
