Kicking off the Pacific Coast Boating Destinations list is none other than the Last Frontier. Kodiak Island is the 2nd largest island in the United States, rich with extreme wilderness and beauty. It is also home to the Kodiak bear, which is a subspecies of brown bears that grow to be larger than grizzly bears. If this isn’t a desirable aspect, there’s other wildlife, such as red foxes, black-tailed deer, elk, and over 200 species of birds (including bald eagles). Kodiak also offers excellent fishing for all five species of Pacific salmon, halibut, rockfish, lingcod, steelhead, rainbow trout, and Dolly Varden. Whether you’re an avid fly fisherman looking to wet your line in a remote river, or a wannabe salty dog in search of a trophy halibut, the rich ocean waters, and rivers of Kodiak Island are the perfect place for a fishing trip.
From the lush green interior, spectacular mountains, and beautiful coastline – it’s no question as to why the Pacific Northwest is renowned for its rugged-mystical beauty. Seattle is located on an inlet called Puget Sound, which consists of a complex system of waterways that were formed by receding glaciers about 14,000 years ago. These waterways not only allow for a beautiful view of the scenery, but they’re also teeming with life, such as orcas, dolphins, seals, fish, birds, and many other smaller life forms. Puget Sound is also home to a cluster of islands, called the San Juan Islands, which are just outside of Anacortes. The three largest and most popular of these islands include Orcas Island, Lopez Island, and San Juan Island. Each respective island has its own events, experiences, sights, and dining. Lastly, located right in the middle of Seattle’s waterfront district is where you’ll find Bell Harbor Marina. There are many waterfront activities within easy walking distance including the new Ferris wheel, restaurants, the Pike Street Market area, and Pioneer Square.

Three Arches Rocks is a geographical landmark off the northern coast of Tillamook and was the first U.S. National Wildlife Refuge located east of the Mississippi. The rocks provide habitat for Oregon’s largest breeding colony of tufted puffins. The refuge also supports one of the largest breeding colonies of common murre south of Alaska and is the only pupping site on the north Oregon coast for the Steller sea lion. To prevent disturbance to extremely sensitive seabirds and marine mammals, Three Arch Rocks is closed to public entry year-round, and waters within 500 feet of the refuge are closed to all watercraft from May 1 through September 15. The views and wildlife can be enjoyed from either a regulated distance aboard your vessel or from the Cape Meares Wildlife Refuge, which is known for its lighthouse and stunning ocean views.
Morro Bay is a seaside city with a quaint fishing village feel located on the central coast of California. It is best known for and home to Morro Rock, a 576-foot-tall volcanic mound at the end of Morro Rock Beach. If you find yourself in Morro Bay, you’ll probably get the chance to see a plethora of creatures, such as dolphins, otters, sea lions, harbor seals, and even whales, as well as a wide array of various bird species. In fact, avid bird watchers have named Morro Bay one of the country’s best places for bird watchers. Morro Bay is also known for its fishing, inhabiting species such as tuna, salmon, and halibut.
Located 22 miles off the coast of Southern California, Catalina Island is a destination for over one million people each year. From scenic coastline vistas with crystal blue water, and high adventure activities like bison expeditions and ziplining, to much-needed rest and relaxation under a cabana or from the comfort of your own boat, Catalina Island has it all. Take the trip for a day, or stay overnight. Two Harbors, colloquially known as “The Isthmus”, is a small unincorporated community island village in the North, while the incorporated city and resort-style community of Avalon is in the South. Two Harbors offers mooring reservations across 10 locations around Catalina, making finding a safe place to anchor your boat a breeze! Lover’s Cove, to the east of Avalon, and Descanso Beach, to the west of the Casino, are popular places to dive. At Casino Point is the Avalon Underwater Dive Park, the first non-profit underwater park in the United States.

Positioned just across the bay from downtown San Diego, Coronado is consistently voted the best beach in the U.S. by Dr. Beach. Cabo San Lucas, commonly referred to as just Cabo, is a tropical resort city at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula, in Mexico where the Pacific meets the Sea of Cortez. Cabo has been a favorite spot for sportfishing for a long time, with three different sportfishing tournaments taking place in October. Some even refer to it as “The Marlin Capital of the World”. In fact, the famed author, Ernest Hemingway traveled to Baja California during his lifetime to witness the thrilling experience of sportfishing. Sought-after fish species found in these waters include striped marlin, sailfish, yellowfin tuna, dorado (Mahi-mahi), wahoo, roosterfish, cubera, snapper, and jack crevalle. Aside from a fisherman’s paradise, Cabo also has beautiful beaches, restaurants, shopping, and resorts; as well as a plethora of water-based activities like whale watching, snorkeling, and surfing. One popular attraction that can only be seen by boat is El Arco, or Arco de San Lucas, a prominent arc-shaped rock formation on the southernmost point of Cabo.
