The heritage of Luhrs Boats can be traced back to the early 1800s when Henry Luhrs relocated to the USA from Germany. He began a career in marine trade and eventually went on to own a warehouse-like store that sold diverse supplies for boats and ships. His grandson, also named Henry, who shared a strong passion for the sea, remained in the marine space, building and repairing vessels off the coast of New Jersey, where he continued the family tradition.
History of Luhrs Boats
The business grew exponentially into what was eventually called Luhrs Sea Skiff Company, producing over 1200 boats a year. At this point, Henry’s sons, John and Warren, were involved in the family business, learning and mastering the art of boatbuilding. In 1965, the Luhrs Sea Skiff Company was sold to Bangor Punta, a lumber company.
Expansion of Luhrs Boats
After the sale, John and Warren set sights on a new undertaking to continue the family tradition. Together they purchased Silverton Sea Skiffs and successfully expanded the business soon after into Hunter Marine,
Mainship Trawlers, and Luhrs Marine, reclaiming the Luhrs name in 1985 with a fishing boat brand.
Types of Luhrs Yachts
Luhrs Marine built small to mid-size convertible yachts with a classic design and tournament-ready features that dominated the market. These boats were perfect for overnight cruising,
saltwater fishing, day cruising, and freshwater fishing, thanks to their medium-depth draft and wide beam.
Luhrs Marine Files for Bankruptcy
Two years later, they opened a production company in St. Augustine, FL to keep up with consumer demand for the sportfish market. Luhrs Boats saw great success until the recession hit in 2008, in which they were forced to file for bankruptcy. Today, only the Hunter brand founded by the Luhrs family remains in business as part of
Marlow-Hunter, LLC.
