The “43S” is Gorgeous. She is identifiable by her trademark broad, wine red stripe on her hull sides set off by mirrored and shark fin shaped windows in the superstructure that makes her look like she’s running hard while sitting still. The hardtop, with Azimuts signature raked aft section, shaded the cockpit, and a series of square windows in her hull sides complete the “S” treatment. Looks are not the only features that are breakthrough for Azimut. Teamed up with Volvo Penta to become Italy’s first boat builder to incorporate IPS drives as standard equipment on one of its models.

The Volvo Penta 370HP IPS 500s are the perfect match and has low hours. While the IPS is a perfect match, the interior is stunning. The moment you enter the salon, the two cream colored settes contrast with the dark wenge wood, while those huge shark-fin windows as well as the big windshield, bring in plenty of light. The space can be further brightened by retracting the 5’3”X6’5” electric roof and opening the glass and stainless sliding doors. Beautiful and Elegant are the words that come to mind. To The Potential Yacht Purchaser,

We have recently had the great pleasure of purchasing our yacht Dulce Vida, a Caver 450 Voyager, through Gregg Somerville of Galati Yacht Sales.

This was a transaction involving more than the usual formalities, as we purchased the yacht ‘sight unseen’ from our home in Auckland, New Zealand, with the yacht being located in Tampa, Florida.

Also, for anybody considering moving up to a larger yacht (as we did) I can recommend Gregg as a patient and thorough boating tutor, who certainly helped ease us into the operation of our new vessel. Thanks for the backing-and-berthing instruction, Gregg!

As this purchase involved the export of the boat from Florida to New Zealand, Gregg and the rest of team at Galati Yacht Sales had to ensure more than the normal amount of paperwork was completed, to satisfy the various authorities. Despite the time-zone issues, communication throughout was regular, timely and thorough, and the documentation flawless – evidence of the experience and knowledge Gregg, Sandra and the Galati Yachts team have amassed.

This year’s show will feature an impressive selection of power boats and sailboats in a new, significantly larger waterfront area and on land, including a 40,000-square-foot clearspan tent housing all types of marine gear. You know, it is always amazing when you see one of these boats out of the water.  She looks so much bigger out of the water.  One of the guys who works at the yard made a comment while I was standing there looking at her.  I told him she always looks bigger out of the water where you can see her entire bottom.  He said “Yeah, my wife is the same way!”   I got a chuckle out of that one. 

After the hull was pressure washed, we cleaned the boot stripe really well.  There is always that grey smudge that you just can reach from the upper deck caused by exhaust and dirty water slapping up above the bottom paint.  The next thing we will do is wax the entire hull.  That is when and where you really figure out how big these boats are.  It is hot, sweaty work.  Some guys will pay detail teams to come in and do it, but I prefer to do it myself.

We were shut down by thunderstorms today while cleaning the air filters on the engines.  I actually go to the extent of getting a filter cleaning kit from Detroit.  Lots of people overlook cleaning these air filters but it is critical and it is really simple.  You spray them with cleaner, have them sit for 10 minutes, let them dry thoroughly, and then you spray them with a special oil.  I see this overlooked on so many boats.

When the guests arrived we headed out. The weather man said it would be 1-2 foot seas and 8-10 kt winds.  HE LIED.  By the time we hit 20 miles it was 3- 4 foot, choppy and right on our nose.  We went ahead with it anyway at a reduced speed to make it more comfortable.  We ended up fishing 3 different spots in 145 foot of water.  We caught mangrove snapper, red snappers, black grouper and red grouper.  We had one young lady on board that I believe caught nearly all the fish.  She was on fire.  I was very pleased with our catch considering we did it with one hand tied behind my back and in less than desirable conditions.
 
By the time we started heading home, the seas had increased to 3-5 foot.  Normally 3-5 foot is not that bad, but the seas were straight up and down choppy.  Fortunately, our ride home was all down sea.  Along the way we heard a Coast Guard call that there was a 20 foot boat capsized 5 miles off of Clearwater.  We also heard a charter boat out of Clearwater call the Coast Guard.  The captain had found a 21 foot drifting with its anchor down but not hung and there was a dive flag up.  He gave the Coast Guard all the pertinent information and immediately went on a search pattern up wind and up current of the drifting dive boat.  A very long half an hour later the charter boat called the Coast Guard and reported that he had indeed found the divers safe and drifting.  The lucky divers were picked up one mile away from their boat.  I can not imagine how those divers felt and what must have gone through their minds when they surfaced and saw their boat drifting away.  Lesson learned. Always leave someone top side when you dive from a boat.

My kids are out of school for the summer so I took them for a 5 day trip to Key West.  It was weird being in Key West without a boat.  I have never been there and stayed in a hotel.  I know what you are thinking: Why would you go where you always go?  Two main reasons.  First, my kids had never been to the Dry Tortugas and second, we have been wanting to dive the Vandenburg (a retired missile tracking ship).

We left Fort Myers on the Fort Myers to Key West Fast Cat Ferry.  It is THE way to go to Key West and beats the heck out of the long drive.  It left Fort Myers at 8am and arrived in Key West at noon.  It was very nice, with satellite TV, bars and comfortable seating.  We arrived in Key West and checked into the Westin right on Malory square.  Malory Square is the west facing side of Key West where the cruise ships tie up.  Every afternoon there is a veritable circus of different acts and street performers that set up along the water as the tourists in Key West turn out in Malory Square for sunset.  It is quite entertaining.  You can see everything from house cats jumping thru hoops of fire to a guy getting out of a straight jacket to high wire juggling acts.

On Thursday we got up early and caught yet another Fast Cat ferry.  This one was the Yankee Freedom out of the Turtle Crawls dock.  It runs daily to the Dry Tortugas to Fort Jefferson.  The trip is 2 hours to make the 70 mile crossing.  I spent MANY years running live aboard dive trips out to Fort Jefferson.  It is a national park with outstanding snorkeling and diving.  The Fort itself is a classic red brick fort coming directly out of the water.  It is complete with cannons and a mote.  Anyone who has not been should go.  Take your own boat or take the ferry.  It is worth the time.  There is a huge amount of history out there.  My kids really enjoyed the snorkeling but were intrigued by the history and the fort, as well.

On Saturday I rented a center console boat and took everyone out to the reefs for a day of snorkeling.  We had perfect conditions.  We saw many big fish and lobsters and even had an 8 foot bull shark swim by us.  We were in a protected reef area.  On each dive we fed the yellowtail snappers.  All it took was crumbling a little bread in the water and you were swarmed by 75- 100 snappers, damsels and a few barracudas.  On our third reef snorkel, I pulled up to the reef and found that a friend of mine was tied up to one of the mooring balls.  It was the “Fins,” a very pretty Viking Sportfish.  The owner of the boat let me tie to his stern.  We all just floated and snorkeled and relaxed.  The owner of the “Fins” had a tank float that had a 50 foot hose and regulator on it.  We all took turns doing shallow dives without the hassle of all the full dive gear.

On Sunday we rode out to dive a wreck with Lost Reef Scuba.  Their boat trip was very nice and super professional.  They took us out just beyond the reef to The Vandenburg.  The Vandy, as it is nicknamed, is a retired 575 foot missile tracking ship from the cold war era.  It rests in about 150 feet of water.  You may have seen one of many documentaries that have air on the history channel.  She sits upright on the ocean floor.  The upper most of the towers and huge radar tracking dishes sit at 50 – 70 feet.  The main deck is at 90-100 feet.  It has many places that you can swim in and out of compartments and corridors.  There were huge schools of cigar minnows and the jacks were rushing through the bait schools throughout both of the dives we did there. It is one of those dives that is a must see.

Beyond that, we just relaxed by the pool and strolled up and down Duval Street.  Duval Street is such a great place to people watch.  I was shocked upon arrival to see that the marinas were half empty.  I had been told a month ago that there were lots of boats there.  They did fill up a bit as the weekend went on but overall Key West was pretty slow.  In the 5 days I was there, only one cruise ship pulled in.  I was told that the oil spill has interrupted the cruise ships that normally come out of New Orleans.  Sunday night was the fire works display. They were shot from the White Street pier on the south shore of Key West.  They lasted about a half an hour and were pretty good. We stood on the beach at the base of White Street pier and watched them.

I do have a few fishing reports from Key West. The Yellowtail snapper and Mutton fishing is red hot on the bar past the reef.  There is also dolphin being caught, though on the small side. I did see one Wahoo about 50 lbs hit the docks.  Very few charter boats are even leaving the dock.  Hope to fish again soon and give you all some fishing reports of my own.

Now, back to waxing all the metal on the outside of the boat.  Nearly all the metal fixtures outside the boat are screwed to the deck or house.  Therein lies the first problem.  When you rub the metal wax onto the cleat or chalk, wax gets down into the screw head.  Getting it out is a time consuming pain in the butt.  Really nothing short of a tooth pick with a thin rag on it or a q-tip gets it out.  If you allow the wax to stay in the tight spaces in a screw head or around the edges of a screw, it will hold salt and cause corrosion much quicker.  I use Meguiar’s metal wax and a tooth brush to apply it.  It is orange and pasty.  I prefer it to white colored metal wax because you can see residue better.  Other metal things such as the stainless on a fighting chair is sometimes best just unscrewed from the chair.  It just takes so much time to do.  I dropped two tooth brushes over the side today while doing the stainless steel cleats on the bow.  Who would have guessed they sink?  So I had to find another on board.  I was not going to use my own tooth brush and surely won’t use the boss’s tooth brush for this job, so I went in the crew head and found my mate’s.  I think I will put it back and see how much he shouts when he sees it.  Kyle is hanging upside down from a rope on the side of the cabin right now.  He is buffing the upper sides of the wheelhouse cabin.  Here I am complaining about the pain of metal waxing and the young buck is hanging there running a buffer with all the blood running to his head.  I better go back out and do all the aluminum.  I like to use Alumiguard.  It is an oil that coats the aluminum and dries over time.  It works best on brushed aluminum as is tends to penetrate the micro brush marks and protects against salt.  It goes on easy and doesn’t need to be wiped off.

Kyle and I have the inside of the boat looking great and the outside on the boat is almost done. We all know what that means, we get to start over again.  Wax on wax off…….
Sorry about no fishing reports.  I will hopefully have some fishing reports right after the July 4th weekend.

The talk on the dock turns from fishing to what is the next system out there and “Where do you think it is going to go?”  While it makes for lively conversation on the dock, The harsh reality is you have to do more than just talk about it.  As a captain of a sportfish, you have a valuable investment in your care. Tracking and preparing for any coming storm is always sitting in the back of your mind.  On our boat, we prepare early and have all of our extra dock lines complete with fire hose for chafing gear stashed in one compartment. We have our ” Hurricane Plan”  in place as requested by our insurance company.

We have all of our things ready should the boat have to move out of harms way or if it should have to ride out harsh conditions. I had a guy on the dock tease me because I was making up storm lines with no storm threatening. It is that very same guy that will be cutting up his anchor line 12 hours before the impact of a storm in the rain.  

I always feel it better to plan ahead.  No matter what you do do get ready for storm season you still have to always prepare for the worst and pray for the best.

REEL WORTHLESS first blue water trip of the year.  Our Viking 64 performed flawlessly
on the 3 day trip into the Gulf of Mexico that was not closed by the oil spill.
The fish are there and we did not encounter any signs of the oil.  The water was
great and Captain Myles Colley with mates Alex Pinney, Travis Gill and Guest Bill
Conner never had a dull moment as we encountered large schools of whales and yellow
fin tuna along with our first Blue Marlin of the season which was released in great
shape.  We were also rewarded with some really nice Yellow Edge Grouper, Dolphin
and Wahoo.

The Viking 64 is the finest fishing platform available bar none and I can’t describe
how great our experience has been with Galati Yachts after the sale!!

Jason’s Latest Fish Story

In my line of work, I spend lots on nights on the road in crappy hotels eating worse food, but on this day, I was staying in a borrowed condo on the beach in Lido Key Florida. And it had a grill outside.

It all started the day before when the two-day meeting my colleague Joe Lingerfelt and I were having with the big wigs at Galati Yacht Sales not only was going well, but was going quickly. We had another few hours scheduled on Tuesday to talk about Search Engine Optimization for the web site we built for them, but Carmine Galati suggested that if we got things done efficiently, there might be time for a quick trip out to a secret wreck that his brother Chris knew. Nothing makes two guys like Joe and me efficient with our time like the promise of getting out on the water, so worked late Monday night developing an SEO plan so that Tuesday’s meeting might go quickly.

Sure enough, we’d jumped aboard Team Galati by around 11 am and headed offshore with Captain Chris at the helm. Our Mate for the day was Galati Broker to the Stars Chris Carrere. Chris took an afternoon off selling boats to look after Joe and I, and boy did he ever look after us.

As Captain Chris maneuvered the Tiara upwind and current of the wreck, he gave the signal to drop the anchor.  When he shut down the engines, he twirled the helmsman seat around and with the words “Well boys, there are fish waiting for you down there that have never been caught before,” we were off to the races.

We’ve all heard fish stories before—and I have been known to never let details get in the way of a good story—but this is the honest truth. Within 90 seconds of lines going in the water, we hooked in to an Amberjack. As the fish came on the gunwale, we all turned around to see what Chris had to say about it. A simple shake of the head and “He’s not worth the ice,” and AJ went back into the drink.

A few more throwbacks, and then I hooked into something that felt substantially different than the Amberjack.  Now I am no pro with a hook, but even I knew this was different.  Mate Chris helped me through the rookie mistakes and when I got the fish closer to the boat, there was enthusiasm and general excitement in the two Chris’s voices saying, I think it’s a Cobia.

I’m looking around for a 20-foot center console boat, which is what I know to be a Cobia, and said, “We are the only ones out here, what are you guys talking about?

“No, you dope, the fish you have is a Cobia.”

“Is that good?” I asked.

A truly dreadful looking fish on the outside, I soon discover, and they get very angry at being brought out of their environment and leave a trail of blood on the deck. But this is a great tasting fish, Chris assures me.

Suddenly, a seed is planted in my pin head, and remembering that there is a grill at the borrowed condo, I ask if it can be grilled.  OF COURSE it can be grilled.  Visions of Gourmet Magazine meeting Sport Fishing Magazine seep into my brain, and, as casually as I can, I  ask, “So what do you do with the fish you catch?  Sell them?”

“No, we eat them.”

Wondering if I am going to actually walk away from this trip with something I can cook that night, my peaceful thoughts are interrupted by another fish on, then another.  Joe and I madly reel in two more Cobias.

Now and then, despite the action, I can’t help myself, and I peek at my Blackberry, wondering what I am missing at the office. Captain Chris smirks, shakes his head, and says, “You won’t get service out here. Put the thing away – the e-mails will be there when we get back.”

Carmine later tells me that Chris brings him out there sometimes when he feels that some cell phone separation would be good for his older brother.

Then something amazing happens.

Joe hooks into something very rare indeed.  But it ran forward and all I heard was Capt Chris saying it was running for the anchor.  I guess they can tell what kind of fish they have by which way they run, and Chris thought it might be a Kingfish. With the skill of tight rope walker, Mate Chris asked for the rod from Joe and danced his way to the bow like an America’s Cup Bowman going to set a spinnaker. He cleared the line from the anchor rode and walked the rod back to the cockpit on the other side and handed it back to Joe. Chris is hootin’ and hollering and when the fish gets close to the cockpit, his voice turns from enthusiasm to guarded apprehension.

“Now Jason, get well back, because these fish have teeth that will send you to the hospital. It’s big and it will flop around a lot.”

My mother didn’t raise an idiot, so I calmly replaced my rod in a rod holder, then ran with all speed to hide behind Captain Chris at the helm station.  There is a moment of calm before the storm as the fish continues to tire, and Mate Chris turns to  Captain Chris in the chair and me hiding behind him and asks, “Is this the biggest gaff you got?”

A rookie like me figured those are some pretty cool words to hear.

Chris says, “That is a BIG ole king Fish. Would’ve won the tournament last week.”

A little later, figuring we’ve run out all our luck at this wreck (I am now convinced it isn’t luck, it is professional fisherman knowing their equipment, their waters and the species they are going after), we took a side trip to another wreck that was better publicized.  I had mentioned earlier that I really love Grouper, and while neither Chris has said anything, I am sure they’ve been figuring that if I wasn’t going into full-on Blackberry DT’s, we might be able to grab a Grouper at the next spot.  Sure enough, I landed a nice one and we called it a day.

Later, back at the condo, I cooked it, and we had a meal to remember on top of a day to remember.  Sure beats room service.  Thanks to the Galatis for making this happen.

2010 Gulf Coast Boat Show!

The Gulf Coast Boat Show, at the Wharf, looked like a smaller version of the Ft.
Lauderdale Boat Show with all the best dealers in the Gulfcoast Area participating.
The 30,000 ft Convention Center was full of vendors and water-sport crafts, 100
boats in the water and 150 on land. To accompany such a wonderful event was entertainment
by Rascal Flatts and Darius Rucker at the Amphitheater.

60′ 2008 Hatteras CNV

Meticulously maintained by a full-time crew cosmetically and mechanically. This
4 Stateroom, 3 Head, 2008 Hatteras 60 was ordered with a mask and therefore was
built with a different laminate where the black paint was applied to hold up to
the increased heat.

Beginning in 2008, the all new Hatteras 60 Convertible hull was built using the
SCRIMP infusion method which produces a lighter, stronger product. The exterior
was painted with Alexseal polyurethane paint and the interior has high-gloss cherry
wood as well as many custom upgrades.

She shows beautifully from her glossy exterior to her 1,825hp Caterpillar C32-As.
31 knots is an easy cruise speed, with 1,800 gallons of fuel and turning only 1,850
RPM.  “She has Caterpillar Platinum Plus Extended Warranty Coverage through September

If your yacht is a model year 2000 or newer, you can increase the chances of selling it and selling it for more if you have an extended service plan.  Industry figures show that pre-owned yachts with an extended service plan are 30% more likely to sell than ones without and buyers are willing to pay an extra 10% for yachts that have an extended service plan included with the sale.

A Voyage To Remember

In November, Galati Yacht Sales partnered with G.E. Commercial to take possession of four new Carver Yachts.  The yachts were located in Iuka Mississippi, which is on the Tennessee River.  For the next eight days, 4 Captains and 4 mates would maneuver a 36 SS, 41 CPMY, 43 SS and a 56 Voyager down the Tenn-Tom Waterway to a final destination
of Destin, Florida.

2009 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show Brings Huge Success!

Team Galati ends season with GREAT win

Team Galati ended its Tournament season with a great win! It was all the guys could handle lifting the Grouper up to the scale. They swept all divisions at the weigh-in. Another  IGFA world record was set aboard Team Galati by customer Daniel Munyan who caught the winning Black Grouper.

Super Slam by “Reel Attitude”

“Reel Attitude” is a 68 Viking owned by Jim and Barbara Douglas of Dallas, Texas and based in Port Aransas, Texas. They used the big Viking’s range and speed to actually run 90 miles to the location where they caught the blue marlin to cap off the Super Slam of Swordfish, White Marlin, Sailfish and Blue Marlin in one day. The trip capped off an incredible season
for the team on Reel Attitude as they have tallied 10 Blue Marlin, 16 Sailfish,
5 White Marlin and 3 Swordfish since Memorial Day. A rare day in the Gulf of Mexico on Sept. 12, 2009, JR Douglas on the 68 ft Viking
“REEL ATTITUDE”  caught and released a SUPER SLAM (which is catching 4 different types of billfish in one day). They released a Swordfish at 1:20 AM, a White Marlin at 7:30 AM, a Sailfish at 8:55 AM, which is a Grand Slam ( 3 billfish in one day). They had to move to another location because of a large thunderstorm and decided on a place where they thought there was a good chance of a Blue Marlin. The hunch worked, when they released a Blue Marlin at 2:25 PM for the ultra rare “SUPER SLAM”. This is the first “SUPER SLAM” brought into Port Aransas and one of a very few that
have ever been caught in the Gulf of Mexico.

Marquis 500 Sport Bridge Debut Makes Big Splash
LOW IN PROFILE HIGH IN STYLE
A few months ago Marquis Yachts introduced a sport bridge version of its well received Marquis 500. This is a very special vessel. Every last detail has been scrutinized to reflect Nuvolari-Lenard and Marquis Yacht’s combined reputation for obsessive attention to design, detail and unmatched yacht construction quality. Style and practically meet in the open galley, located on the starboard side. Stainless steel, Brazilian cherry and fashionable wood veneers provide the backdrop for the all practical two-burner range, microwave/convection oven and the refrigerator and freezer drawers. The interior helm, identical in design to the one available on the Sport Coupe, is located port side. Comfortable and adjustable bench seating
provides excellent views forward and through side windows. An attractive steering wheel complements the easy to use IPS joystick control. Besides easy handling, one of the other advantages of compact pod-style system is that they allow boat builders to play with added interior space. The Marquis 500’s lower deck features three good-sized
cabins and two bathrooms with showers. Marquis has chosen to position the masterstateroom forward. It features and walkaround queen bed with ample storage below and ensuite marble bathroom with shower. A VIP, also with a queen bed and a smaller cabin with twin beds located right below the galley, complete the accommodations.

I have been involved in the marine industry since 1992 holding various management roles at the dealer level and Marine lending sector. During my tenure with the marine lenders I was provided an excellent opportunity to serve both manufacturers and dealer relationships throughout the country, gaining an excellent understanding of our industry’s supply chain.

Having been with Galati Yacht Sales since 2004, my first initiative was launching our business office operations with developing new processes and procedures for closing transactions and providing Finance & Insurance products to our customers. These programs remain available today including retail financing, extended service coverage, marine documentation and insurance products all providing an adherent advantage for our consumer. Today I support many roles for Galati Yacht Sales including General Manager of our Tampa Bay operations, while participating as a member of our Board of Directors.

]]> Galati Yacht Sales began in 1970 as a dream and not much else. Michael Galati Sr. moved to Anna Maria Island in Florida with his wife and their five young children to support.

He purchased a tornado-devastated marina on Tampa Bay, with the dream of creating a service and boat dealership. “We’ll work hard and we’ll make it,” Michael would tell his wife, Anna Maria.

“My mom probably worked the hardest of any of us,” recalls Carmine, the second oldest.

Besides caring for her family, Anna Maria Galati also managed the marina store and handled all the billing and deliveries. “I remember I would be holding Chris in one arm and pumping gas for the customers in the other,” she says.

“It was a great place to be…to grow up,” remembers Mike, Jr. about living on the island. “We all started out working on the gas docks, washing boats and catching bait to sell.”

The young Galati’s would all get up early in the mornings to catch pin fish that they would turn around and sell for bait.

When Michael Galati Sr. passed away in l992, the company ownership passed to his children. The Galati siblings were thoroughly prepared to take on a new level of responsibility as they had been trained in all aspects of the business from the time they were children.

They have grown it into one of the largest privately held yacht dealerships in the world.
