Vikings Win Big at the Cajun Canyons Tournament

The 12th annual Cajun Canyons Billfish Classic, presented by H&E Equipment Services, the second leg of The Gulf Coast Triple Crown Championship, is now in the record books. With a fleet of 45 boats, ranging in length from 32' to 95', our participants fished for a total purse of $657,900.00 plus trophies and prizes.

Our festivities started Tuesday evening, May 31 with our Dock Party, sponsored by our host facility, Cypress Cove Lodge & Marina. Everyone enjoyed the boiled shrimp and smoked pork and a good time was had by all. Wednesday, June 1, was our official Registration Day, Captains Meeting, and Kick Off Party. As usual, we were slammed with last minute arrivals of boats-the Mustad bags were a hit. Acme Oyster House lived up to their reputation at our Kick Off Party, sponsored by Le Beouf Towing, with seafood pasta, oyster bar, lima bean soup, fried fish, and of course, bread pudding.

Thursday, June 2, started a little slow (as a result of too much fun Wednesday night maybe?). Optional entries closed at 1:00 pm with a total payout of $657,900.00 with 45 boats. Father Gerry Stapleton from St. Patrick's Cathedral of Port Sulphur, Louisiana visited to continue our tradition of the Blessing of the Fleet. At 4:00 pm, boats departed for the river, the rip, rigs, Mississippi Canyon and Green Canyon in the Gulf of Mexico, led by Chasin Tail an 80' Weaver, with owner John Engquist of H&E Equipment Services and Captain Clayt James.

Friday, June 3, our phones started ringing early at 7:15 am, with Team Wild Hooker a 68' Blackwell with Captain Shane O'Brien and owner Allen Stuart calling in a 116" Blue Marlin in the boat, with Guy Arrington as the angler - the bite was on. Shortly thereafter, the releases started coming in with Born2Run, a 63' Hatteras GTcalling in a Blue Marlin release at 7:25 am and You Never Know!, a 72' F&S calling at 7:41 am with a Blue Marlin release. At 8:30 am, Team Click Through, a 68'...

Viking 80 Convertible

The Viking 80 Convertible is a luxurious fishing machine that with its sleek styling showcases impeccable lines. This boat is a great cross between a sportfish and a motor yacht as it is heavily equipped for some serious fishing, but has well-appointed accommodations similar to motor yachts.

The Viking 80’s cockpit is 216 square feet of every fisherman’s dream! This cockpit is extremely equipped and ready for fishing with a transom door, freezer, tackle storage, general storage, fish wells, live well capacity, ice chest, and a chill box.  Just up from the cockpit is the mezzanine, a perfect place to watch all the fishing action!

Entering through electronic sliding doors you will be marveled by the interior on the Viking 80 Convertible as with its 21’ 5”  beam, the space feels abundant. The salon features gorgeous satin walnut joinery and leather appointments. A day head that is perfect for when you’re out fishing. In the salon there is also a J-lounge and coffee table and just opposite is a walnut cabinet that houses a 60in TV on an electronic lift.

Viking has utilized the space in the galley very nicely. The galley has a good amount of pantry space with a walk-in pantry. The space is also utilized nicely with under counter refrigeration. The 80 Convertible features a double sink, an electronic stovetop, and a second dining area with bar stools. To the starboard of the galley is a raised dinette for dinning that has a dual purpose; it is rod storage for 80 pound outfits.

The All New Viking 52’ Sport Tower

Like a Porsche, this sporty boat is Quick, Capable, and Timeless

Viking Yachts unveiled three new models last month, two of which were displayed at the VIP event held last month at Farley State Marina in Atlantic City – an awe inspiring 92’ Enclosed Bridge and a sporty new 52’ Sport Coupe with Tower. The 75’ Motoryacht was shown to dealers while still under construction at the Bass River factory located just up the road. Undoubtedly, you will read many articles on the incredible new 92’ and 75’ MY as they are indeed milestones for the Viking Yacht Company now celebrating its 50th year of building yachts. But, it was the smallest of these yachts that caught my eye. After a rigorous sea test with customers, I found the 52’ Sport Coupe to be a truly amazing machine.

First, let’s look at the stats. She’ll cruise efficiently at 34.5 knots and top out at 42 knots with the MAN V12 1,400hp ultra-smooth and smoke-free next generation engines. She carries 1,450 gallons of fuel with all tankage resulting in a range of over 400 nautical miles at cruise!!! Her massive 17’ 6” beam gives you an extremely roomy and stable fishing platform. And, here is a number you will not see on any other express boat: 6’ 3” engine room. Yes, over 6 feet of standing heading room in the engine room! Simply amazing and kudos to the designer David Wilson and team of Viking engineers – these guys really know what fishermen want.

We tested hull No.1 featuring an innovative 3 / 2 layout down below. This format gives you 2 private bunk rooms for your fishing buddies, and a nice queen size island birth forward with private head as the master’s domain. An optional open floor plan 2 stateroom layout is offered as well.

The whole idea behind an express boat is it keeps everybody in the action on main helm deck. You can’t fight a fish from the flybridge, right? The express design is perfect for owner-operators as well as...

Celebrating 50 Years

(May 2014, New Gretna, New Jersey) Back in April 1964, Brothers Bill and Bob Healey opened the doors to the Viking Yacht Company and focused on building wooden sportfishing and cruising boats in a modest 26,000 square foot building with dirt floors and no heat. The early years were tough but the brothers persevered egged on by a simple passion to build a better boat every day. The dedication and hard work paid off and 50 years later, the Viking Yacht Company is the world’s largest manufacturer of high-performance, luxurious sportfishing convertible yachts ranging from 42 to 92 feet.

The Viking Yacht Company is unique within the marine industry. In addition to being family-owned and operated with second generation Healey members running the day-to-day operations, the company is vertically integrated. Virtually 90 percent of what goes into a Viking yacht is designed and manufactured in our 810,000 square feet facility on the banks of the Bass River near Atlantic City, New Jersey. A pair of five-axis computer operated milling machines produces the plugs to make the various molds for each of the 17 models in the product line. The mill cuts various hardwoods and veneers for structural components, trim and interior furniture. In the metal shop, aluminum and steel is fabricated into bow and safety rails, engine beds, and intricate framework for hardtops, machinery brackets and various styles of backing plates and custom items. In the fiberglass shop, hulls are resin infused, and custom designed fuel, water and waste tanks are produced for every hull to maximize capacity and draw. Wiring harnesses are hand-made in the electrical shop and printed every eight inches with its function.

Subsidiaries, Atlantic Marine Electronics and Palm Beach Towers deliver accessory packages allowing the convenience of turnkey delivery. And with three fully staffed service yards in Florida and New Jersey no one even approaches Viking’s commitment to after sale service.

“REBEL” With A Cause–To Catch The Big One

Costa Rica, meaning “Rich Coast” in Spanish, features a high quality coastline with a wide, diverse landscape.  Included are dry tropical and temperate forests, rain forests and volcanoes, Caribbean and Pacific beaches, and high mountains to marshy lowlands.  Costa Rica is famous for its more than 1,400 species of orchids, its rich coffee plantations, its newest Galati Yacht Sales office location (okay, so it will be famous for this in the near future), and of course, its world-class fishing tournaments.

“This is the best fishing season I have seen here in 14 years,” said Tony Carrizosa, broker with Galati Yacht Sales.  “And there’s still a long fishing season to go.” In Los Sueños, where Galati recently celebrated the grand opening of their 9th office, “fishing is a way of life,” added Tony.  Los Sueños plays host to a series of fishing tournaments, including the decade-long Signature Billfish Series and the former Marlin Invitational, which are now combined and known as the First Annual Signature Triple Crown series – a three-leg event that began in late January and will end in mid-March.

To compete in these tournaments, serious anglers need serious boats.   “REBEL is a must have 2013 55’ Viking Convertible,” Tony said with excitement.  “Fully loaded, this vessel is equipped with MAN V-NEW12 1550 CRMs, 2 Onan generators, 21kw and 13.5 kw.  You will reach the fishing grounds quick with a 36-knot cruise and 40-knot top end.”  Some more facts:

VIKING 52 CONVERTIBLE: TROLLING THUNDER

The new Viking 52 Convertible is a serious contender, whether you want to fish hard or relax in luxury.

As we’ve seen in past Viking models like the Viking 66 Convertible, this manufacturer’s expertise is grounded in crafting premium bluewater fishing boats for the tournament crowd—a shrewd group that’s not so easy to please. Viking has been around for 50 years now, but it spent more than three decades constructing only convertibles. That type of moxie gets noticed by tournament crews who are themselves a dauntless bunch. Viking’s convertible lineup currently ranges from 42 to 92 feet, and the newest addition is this 52, a model that the builder says is a culmination of its many years of experience.

Imagine winds gusting off the Atlantic at 30 knots. Seas are five to six feet. Throw in some driving rain for interest. Messy. That’s the kind of stuff that’s just par for the course for a Viking. With a fine entry and high bow, this 52 is designed to shoulder through waves effortlessly. The convex hull form takes advantage of high-performance, turbo-charged diesels that deliver speed and efficiency. With a pair of 1,400-hp MAN engines, the 52 should cruise at 35 knots and top out at 40, which is fast enough for any crew to be competitive on the big-purse circuit.

Like all Vikings, the 52 is engineered to be highly fishable, and this model proved its mettle early on when the first hull won the Beach Haven White Marlin Invitational off the coast of New Jersey, shortly after the boat was splashed in the summer of 2013. The 145-square foot-cockpit is equipped with the features and systems that lure anglers as efficiently as a chum slick brings bait. The space can be equipped with a bait freezer, rigging station, tackle locker, a 4’7”-long fishbox, and 40-gallon live well. Flush rod holders, raw and freshwater washdowns, a Glendinning Cablemaster, and a transom door are standard, as is the excellent nonslip on the fiberglass sole....

Viking 62 Convertible

After spending the summer tournament circuit aboard Viking’s new 62 Convertible with a viking 62 convertibleM26000 in the lazzarette, I knew Seakeeper’s products worked. Beyond the tested statistic of 84% roll reduction for that particular boat, I was able to witness it and feel it. When asked how well this product worked, the only thing I could think to say was, “Let’s go for a ride.” Sea trial after sea trail clients became Seakeeper believers as we sat in rough seas demonstrating this breakthrough in vessel stability. While everyone braced themselves for the waves that usually would cause the boat to roll, laughter and amazement told the story of the Seakeeper’s capabilities. Just when I thought Seakeeper could not impress me anymore, they ended up doing just that.

I recently had the privilege to visit Seakeeper’s manufacturing facility and attend the hands on training, as well as some training seminars. Learning more about the product and the company was an invaluable experience. Understanding how the product worked, and seeing the evolution of the products was incredible.

If you are unfamiliar with Seakeeper, please ask us about them, or coordinate with us a sea trial to see the magic work for yourself. Do not wait, Seakeeper is truly changing the way people spend time on the water.

Also, look for us this summer, as our new Viking 66 Demo, with a M26000 onboard, will be touring the tournament circuit. Stop by at these Gulf events to ask about Viking and Seakeeper because this is a combination that you will not want to miss.

You're Only 50 Once

April 1, 2014 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Viking Yacht Company, founded by brothers Bill and Bob Healey. What began as a small builder of wooden boats has become the world's leader in the design and manufacturing of high-performance, luxury convertible sport fishing yachts.

We have many events planned for our Viking Golden Anniversary celebration stretching out over the coming year and we kick off with an exciting new Viking fishing tournament in Key West April 2-5, 2014.

This tournament will be open to all of your Viking clients with a special twist to make it what we call a Family Fishing Funament. This tournament is about FUN and we aim to bring as many families together as we can to enjoy the fishing, the camaraderie, the great Conch cooking and the spirit of family togetherness aboard Viking yachts.

Unlike hardcore tournaments, the Viking Golden will have as many opportunities to win as there are participants. And there is no money to win, just lots of fun, a great time to remember and being a part of this historic event. We are still working out some details, but there will be categories for sails and groupers, snappers and barracuda, marlin and tuna, tarpon and snook and just about everything and anything that your clients are likely to catch. Maybe even something for the fish they miss. We promise an Award Dinner the likes of which you have probably never seen before, and one you will never forget. After all, you are only 50 once!

We have contacted four Key West marinas (A & B Marina, The Galleon, Conch Harbor, Key West Bight) to secure dockage and hope you will attend this very special event. More information will follow shortly, but in the meantime, please begin contacting your Viking owners today to alert them to call the marinas listed below to reserve a slip and save the date. Docking at these marinas is not required to enter the tournament, but they are where most of the festivities will take place. In addition, please let your clients know that...

55' Viking TEAM GALATI has banner year!

With much experience from prior builds, "Team Galati" put together some incredible ideas and specs to build this demo. The 55' was a newly introduced model when much thought went into what was necessary to build an incredible fishing machine. The team wanted this 55' to be a fast, extensively equipped great looking demo. She was one of the first hulls to be built with “stars and stripes” blue paint and that set her apart from other Vikings on the water at first sight.

TEAM GALATI was built for extensive travel and serious fishing. She has MAN 1800s so you'll enjoy the ride getting where you're going at 39 knots (cruise) and 43 knots (top end). She has 3 spacious and elegant staterooms, 2 heads and a state-of-the-art Atlantic Marine Electronics package.

For fishing, other great equipment on board includes 2 generators (one 21 KW and one 13.5 KW), a flush mounted bow well, 4-rod rocket launchers, teaser reels, EXTRA storage for 30 rods and reels, a full custom live well system with 8 tuna tubes in transom box, and an in-deck live well flush mounted under the fighting chair.

At the dock she's still awesome. At night you will enjoy the underwater Ocean LED lighting, which creates a dramatic show of patterns and colors that illuminate the bottom and hull sides, as well as the recessed tri-color lighting that enhances the tower, bridge and cockpit.

TEAM GALATI was delivered in August of 2013. She started her debut fishing tournaments in the Northeast and then headed to Cabo. From August last year to this September, TEAM GALATI has caught 371 billfish! This total includes 304 striped marlin, 47 white marlin, 9 blue marlin, and 11 sailfish. TEAM GALATI is still in Cabo where she is getting ready to fish the Bisbee.

92 where are you?

The Viking 92 Convertible, our new flagship, which launches next summer, is commanding all the space in Building 5. The massive hull plug is a work of art, with a whole lot of sanding going on as Viking shipwrights continue to shape and detail the plug to make the mold. Even in this raw state, you can appreciate the beautiful, breathtaking lines of the hull.

Alongside the hull plug are the first few parts of the deckhouse plug, which consists of 10 major pieces and a few smaller ones. The foredeck pieces are in place with the starboard side of the deckhouse now in position. (Right) Moving up is the port side deckhouse component.

Back in the plant's R & D, an aft tank plug for the 92 Convertible gets a coat of wax in preparation for building the mold.

2011 Viking 70 Enclosed Bridge

The latest Viking, the 2011 Viking 70 Enclosed Bridge, made its debut in the summer of 2010, joining the rest of the fleet with the finest pedigree in the yacht world. The new Viking 70 EB bears a striking resemblance to its siblings the Viking 82 and Viking 76, with an aggressively raked stem featuring more than eight feet of freeboard forward indicating plenty of headroom beneath the foredeck.

Three feet of aft freeboard in the spacious cockpit eases the releasing and tagging of billfish and tuna. The molded in feature lines intercept the curved smoothness of the flying bridge and deckhouse, in addition to the black metallic mask that wraps around the front of the deckhouse, all seamlessly transitioning into darkly tinted windows contributing to the Viking EB’s distinguished profile.

The Viking 70 EB features a 208 square-foot cockpit with an observation mezzanine that provides ample stowage, multiple freezers, an insulated refrigerated drink box in the salon entrance step, abundant drawers, and engine roomviking 70 enclosed yacht access. The lower cockpit provides a sizeable fish box, a stowage compartment and an available live well beneath the molded non-slip sole. A transom fish box/live well also is available.

Another signature feature of the tournament proven center console helm on the flying bridge are the standard three adjustable Murray Products helm seats with teak ladder backs. Additional seating is available with port and starboard lounges each with rod stowage below and aft facing jump seats. Ahead of the command console is a third lounge, as well as a sink, freezer and drink box cooler.

As you enter the salon through the sliding electrically-operated fiberglass door, you are immediately greeted with an immense room that is both inviting and lavishly appointed with stylish designer furnishings, window treatments and custom valances. Overhead LED lighting sets the mood while natural light streams in from the salon sides and aft bulkhead windows, lending to a spacious and free...

Viking Yachts - Enclosed Bridge

Viking yachts pioneered the development of the enclosed bridge convertible yacht in 1995 with the 58 EB. Since then, the enclosed bridge has become a popular attraction for cruising yachtsmen who desire the performance and handling viking yachts enclosed bridgeof a Viking convertible with the comfort and convenience of a totally climate controlled command station as shown in this Viking 82 Enclosed Bridge Convertible.

In recent years, tournament fishermen also have latched on to the versatility of the enclosed bridge design, in part because the second helm station abaft the aft bulkhead is ideally located for backing down on fish, as well as easing into a slip.

The combination of the available interior staircase and the salon-like accommodations of enclosed bridge are more examples of Viking's commitment to build a better boat every day.

Viking 66 Heading to Galati Yacht Sales

The Viking delivery process is the same whether delivering the boat to an owner or to the dealer. In the case of 66-303 this is a boat being taking into stock inventory for Galati Yacht Sales. Once Viking has completed the 6 month process of building the boat and doing all the tests to insure everything is 100% perfect they invite a dealer representative to come in and "punch the boat". We don't actually hit it with our fist; instead we do a final Quality Inspection and complete a punch list of items that could be better.

Normally, we'd have one of our most experienced captains come in and go through all the systems. But, in this case, I volunteered to do the inspection to gain some valuable sales knowledge about Vikings newest member of the fleet. I viking 66 enclosed yachttraveled to Atlantic City, NJ and then drove 30 minutes north to New Gretna.

My job is to inspect every each of the boat making sure the gel coat is perfect, the teak interior is blemish-free, and every option ordered is installed. Since the boat was winterized and on-deck I was only able to inspect systems that did not require water. As usual, the boat was practically flawless but it’s my job to make a list of imperfections. It was not easy to find them but I looked and looked until I put together a respectable list for the Viking finish up team. Next, they will go through each item on the list and make the necessary correction no matter what it takes. They will do all of this and keep to a very disciplined delivery schedule, which in this case was 5 days later.

The next step in the process, Viking delivers the boat to Atlantic City where they officially turn the boat over to the dealer/customer. At this point we conduct a sea trial with John Stephano, Viking's quality control manager, along with a rep from AME electronics, and a tech from Ramsom Caterpillar. We take the boat out into the Atlantic and run through various checks to insure all boat, engine, and electronic systems are working as designed. If there are...
