Princess Factory Visit

Written by: Rickard Charleson

At Galati Yacht Sales, we believe in continuous education and visiting our brands’ factories to gain better insight on their existing and new products. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit the Princess factory in Plymouth, England. I have visited a number of factories prior, but Princess’ impressive factory size and the expansive range of yachts they manufacture, rank their factory as one of the best. Princess has over 2,000 employees at its factory and offers yachts ranging from the sporty and agile V39 to the huge 40 Meter, which spans to 130 ft.

Princess began making yachts over 50 years ago. While they use automated machines to create the perfect fit and finish, they also believe in skilled craftsmanship. Their location in South West, England has them far away from other manufactures, so they have a tremendous amount of skilled craftsmen that assemble and build individual parts of the boat to perfection. They use nothing but natural materials and hand labor to create the modern feel and luxurious look that Princess has. In fact, they develop and manufacture over 80% of the yacht’s components in house. This does not only give them control of the quality, but also the ability to upgrade and make changes to fit their products better.

Princess has invested a lot of money in their own five axis routers so they can develop new technology into their products and manufacture more new models. During my visit, I was able to preview the new 75 Motor Yacht. This yacht is stunning! It has windows that span from floor to ceiling and gives you an incredible view from inside the yacht. Princess’ new hull designs are yachts that are more efficient, capable of planing at lower speeds, and are adapt to handle the rough seas. The Princess Factory is located outside the English Channel, where the sea is rough and the tide changes are about 30ft. These yachts go out in some of the toughest test conditions...

Princess Announces New V58 Model

The latest addition to the Princess V-Class range, the dynamic new V58 Deck Salon, will be making her World Debut at the upcoming Southampton Boat Show followed by the North American premiere at the 2016 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show.

As opposed to the V58 Open, this enclosed deck model can be climate controlled or opened to the elements via triple sliding glass doors and a retractable sunroof. Her large dynamic hull windows let light pour into the beautifully appointed lower accommodation, which features three guest cabins and two heads including a full-beam master stateroom situated midship.

The main deck salon comes complete with a generous U-shaped sofa around a dining table, a sideboard unit with glass and bottle storage and refrigerator, as well as a 46” LED TV on an electric raise/lower mechanism.

As with all Princess Yachts built for Princess Yachts America, we’ve taken a close look at the standard equipment on the V58 and expanded this to include many features and benefits specific to our market. For example, included with the American specification is an upgraded audio/video package, US appliances (including an upright frost-free refrigerator/freezer), a 17 kw / 60 Hz generator, air conditioning suitable for tropical climates, thicker teak decking, a complete set of china, cutlery, and glasses, and a Palm Beach Tender for the tender garage.

On shore, a large tent encompassed a full bar, DJ, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and vendors of all types. New Princess 75 to Debut at London Boat Show

Princess has made several enhancements to the flybridge layout. Twin helm seats are now fitted as standard and customers can choose to fit optional free- standing furniture in place of the standard sunpad aft. The forward J-shaped seating to starboard has been enlarged and now converts to a sunbed while the forward port side seating as been reconfigured to a single lounger and the wetbar has been restyled.

In the main deck salon, a new crockery unit has been integrated forward of the starboard seating while on the lower deck the owner’s bathroom has been redesigned to improve ease of movement. The toilet has been relocated to the aft bulkhead and can be optionally specified as a combination toilet and bidet.

The first 75 Motor Yacht bound for the US will finish production in August and will make her US debut at the 2016 Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show.

Her elegant exterior styling conceals a voluminous interior and her latest modified deep-V hull will enable her to plane early and offer a wide range of efficient cruising speeds under various conditions.

Natural light flows into the main deck salon through extended window lines and a unique full-height window on the port side makes the free standing dining area a spectacular space to entertain. Sliding glass panels sepa

rate the galley from the open-plan living space. Furthermore, the stunning contemporary design of the salon opens to the well-equipped cockpit via flush sliding patio doors providing a spacious single entertaining area.

All three guest cabins forward on the lower deck are en-suite whilst a dedicated staircase leads to the owner’s stateroom amidships via a private lobby and features a dressing area, en-suite bathroom, and 46” TV. The crew enjoys natural light in the comfortable twin cabin and they’ve managed to fit-out the crew lobby with an optional microwave and dedicated refrigerator.

Seakeeper Gyro is now available on the Princess 43 and Princess 52

Princess Yachts has announced that the Seakeeper 5 gyro will now be an upgrade option on the Princess 43 and Princess 52. Seakeeper gyros are an active gyrostabilizer that eliminates most of the boat roll. They have been an option for many of the larger Princess vessels for sometime and have seen tremendous success.

On the Princess 43 the Seakeeper 5 is shown to be extremely effective while at zero speed, reducing 70% to 80% of the roll. This reduction in roll makes being at anchor and dock a lot more enjoyable. When the Princess 43 is underway the roll reduces progressively to around 20% at 25 knots making riding a lot smoother helping to reduce seasickness. The Seakeeper on the Princess 43 is placed just aft of the lazarette access which still allows for plenty of space for the lazarette.

With the Princess 52 the Seakeeper 5 reduces roll by 50% to 60% while at zero speed. This is a phenomenal percentage and will really help at the dock and at anchor. As the Princess 52 increases speed the roll reduction reduces progressively to around 20%-25% at 20 knots.  The Seakeeper is placed below the lazarette hatch.

The Seakeeper Gyro is a wonderful addition to both the Princess 43 and Princess 52. Having these aboard you vessel will help ensure that no matter the conditions you will still be able to enjoy your boat comfortably.

Princess is celebrating this iconic year with a global launch. This upcoming September Princess will be launching the new 35-meter motor yacht. The 35M will be a semi-custom yacht that is capablie of cruising at both high and low speeds. It will feature a spacious flybridge with a luxurious sunbathing area. The aft cockpit area will make you feel as though you are a beach club with plenty of space to enjoy by the water. It will also have a full-beam master on the main deck and three or four staterooms below. Princess S72: Open or Express Cruiser?

With the debut of the Princess S72, the first model in a new line dubbed S Class, Princess Yachts now occupies an interesting slice of the uppermost cruise-bomb market. The S72 is a hybrid of sorts as it fuses an open flybridge with the low-slung lines an express-style design. The effect? A hammer-down racy edge. The boat is solidly constructed and elegantly finished, too. With an air of control and the Princess reputation for reliability, it seems the S72 is the chairman-of-the-board sports yacht, awash in aggressive design touches.

There’s a lot to be said for a luxury cruiser with two driving stations. From the lower helm at the forward end of the saloon, you control a pair of inboard engines from an enclosed space that’s so impeccably finished the atmosphere is one of effortless cool. From the driving position at the bridge, you’ll get that wind-in-your-face thrill as you enjoy a bird’s eye view of that shapely bow peeling out in front of you.

To create the sexy-as-sin lines, Princess had to keep the flying bridge compact, but even if it is smaller than the top decks on other boats in this size range, it’s still large enough to accommodate six passengers plus a dining table and wet bar. This open bridge has other virtues, too, including excellent sightlines as there are no obstructions. You’ll enjoy that benefit in dicey inlets, narrow channels and restricted visibility. And, of course, when docking.

Docking maneuvers are made easier with the variable Side-Power thrusters offered with the S72. Also available is an optional Seakeeper M26000 gyrostabilizer, which reduces roll when the boat’s at anchor or underway. With the throttles down, the Princess could kiss 40 knots with the largest of three power options under the hatch: two MAN 1,8000-hp V12 diesels. The hull is a deep-V and could be familiar to those who know the Princess brand. That’s because it’s the same running bottom featured on the builder’s V72,...

Introducing the Princess 68

The Princess 64 has been one of the most successful models in our market in recent years. Production will continue for this model for the coming year, with several hulls scheduled for retail delivery. Building on the success of the Princess 64, we are pleased to provide you with information on the new Princess 68, which will fill the current gap in the model range between the 64 and the 72 Motor Yacht. On track for a European premiere showing this fall, followed by a North American debut at the 2015 Miami Yacht & Brokerage Show, the Princess 68 is destined to rewrite the rulebook on flybridge luxury, space and performance.

Wonderfully progressive, incredibly capable, and classically Princess, the 68 has been designed with features that are typically found on much larger yachts:

Key features:

Private access to the owner's stateroom The full beam owner's stateroom is accessed from its own private stairwell running off the main salon. The stateroom includes a full en-suite and dressing area with vast hull-side windows for the most dramatic views and a sofa to watch it all from in complete comfort. A stateroom lobby houses a washer/dryer with space for an additional dryer.

Three large guest cabins Guests will enjoy three further cabins, two en-suites, plus a generous crew quarters. The stairwell to the guest quarters will lift to give access to a huge storage space.

Incredible social areas Two separate seating areas are designed into the main salon with two more areas on the vast flybridge, which also comes with the option of a hardtop with integral sunroof. A high specification aft cockpit comes with surround seating, speakers, bar access from the galley and a wonderful transom seat for the most magical evenings at anchor.

Galley aft doubles your social options The galley aft layout delivers some wonderfully flexible dining options with seating and tables opposite the galley and out in the cockpit. The galley's aft window also opens up at the touch of a button to create...

Princess Yachts recently invited several of the Galati Yacht Sales team and myself to attend factory training at their Plymouth England factory. And yes, it’s the same “Plymouth” that the Mayflower sailed from, an area where skilled craftsmen have been building some of the finest sea-going vessels for centuries. But whereas the ships of old were formed of wood and steel, today’s Princess Yacht is built using the latest in weight saving composite materials, engineered fiberglass cloths, exotic interior woods, and advanced diesel power plants. Our team got to experience the resin infusion process first hand, where advanced fiberglass resins are literally drawn through multiple layers of woven fiberglass mats and advanced coring materials with a vacuum. This process, along with recent advances in computer design, has enabled Princess to utilize more space resulting in interior spaces that are 20 to 30 percent larger than those in boats previously produced. This “Green” process dramatically cuts down emissions of chemicals into the air.

Some quick Princess Yachts facts are:

• Princess employs some 2200 people.

• Princess devotes an incredible $15 to $18 million dollars a year to new products; 300 employees are in design and development..

• Princess produces over 300 boats per year ranging from the V39 to the 132-foot M40, delivering to countries throughout the world. Its closest competitors, Sunseeker and Azimut, each produce less than half that amount.

• Princess is owned by LVMH, the same company that owns DeBeer’s Diamonds, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and many more luxury brands, giving Princess unparalleled financial solidity in the high end yacht market.

Our tour started with a full day of Sea Trials on some of the newest models in the Princess lineup....
