Princess Yachts Factory Training

Princess Yachts recently invited several of the Galati Yacht Sales team and myself to attend factory training at their Plymouth England factory. And yes, it’s the same “Plymouth” that the Mayflower sailed from, an area where skilled craftsmen have been building some of the finest sea-going vessels for centuries. But whereas the ships of old were formed of wood and steel, today’s Princess Yacht is built using the latest in weight saving composite materials, engineered fiberglass cloths, exotic interior woods, and advanced diesel power plants. Our team got to experience the resin infusion process first hand, where advanced fiberglass resins are literally drawn through multiple layers of woven fiberglass mats and advanced coring materials with a vacuum. This process, along with recent advances in computer design, has enabled Princess to utilize more space resulting in interior spaces that are 20 to 30 percent larger than those in boats previously produced. This “Green” process dramatically cuts down emissions of chemicals into the air.
Some quick Princess Yachts facts are:
• Princess employs some 2200 people.
• Princess devotes an incredible $15 to $18 million dollars a year to new products; 300 employees are in design and development..
• Princess produces over 300 boats per year ranging from the V39 to the 132-foot M40, delivering to countries throughout the world. Its closest competitors, Sunseeker and Azimut, each produce less than half that amount.
• Princess is owned by LVMH, the same company that owns DeBeer’s Diamonds, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and many more luxury brands, giving Princess unparalleled financial solidity in the high end yacht market.
Our tour started with a full day of Sea Trials on some of the newest models in the Princess lineup. First was the new V-48, an incredibly sexy Volvo IPS powered machine that boasts a full beam master stateroom, Hydraulic bathing platform and retractable sunroof. The ride was incredible, achieving speeds over 30kts! This boat will debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show 2013. We followed the Princes V-48 with the “all new” Princess 52 Fly bridge and Princess 56 Fly bridge. Both boats are equipped with the powerful and quiet 800 CRM MAN Diesels and a suite of Garmin 8000 series electronics. These new fly bridge models have panoramic saloon windows that give their guests expansive, unobstructed views of the ocean. Both models also have generous full beam master staterooms with massive picture frame windows on either side. They each have an exceptional ride due to the new variable dead rise hull designs and powered through the choppy Atlantic sea with grace and agility. Our final sea trial came on the brand new 82 Motor Yacht. This astonishing vessel features a 4-stateroom, 4-head layout with private crew accommodations for three. Twin Caterpillar 1925hp diesels power this MY and cut thru the seas at speeds of nearly 30 knots! Zero speed stabilization kept everyone aboard on sure footing while decreasing pitch and roll dramatically. The interior spaces are modern and elegant and the fly bridge is huge. The Princess 82 Motor Yacht is truly one of the most stunning 80-foot plus yachts on the market.
Our visit to Princess Yachts was nothing short of remarkable and incredibly informative. The area around Plymouth, England is full of generations of skilled shipwrights, rich history, incredible food, friendly locals, and the finest yacht manufacturing facilities in the world. We thank them for their generosity and can’t wait to see what great yachts they bring us in the years to come. Galati Yacht Sales invites you to make plans to see all of these Princess Yachts and more at the Princess display at the Fort Lauderdale boat show or by contacting one of our dedicated Princess sales experts for a private viewing.
